Part One: Home
At the Delilah household the phone rings. Mother runs into the hall and hurriedly picks it up.

Mother: Hello?

Female Science Teacher: Mrs Delilah?

Mother: Speaking. Who’s this?

Female Science Teacher: This is Melody’s science teacher. I’m glad I’ve managed to get hold of you but---

Mother (interrupting): ---What’s wrong?

Female Science Teacher: I have been informed by one of our students that Melody is planning on taking some of the class to see a talking---

Mother (to herself): Oh shit.

Female Science Teacher: ---gorilla at Bedfordshire Zoo. I thought you should know just in case there was any cause for---

Mother (unconvincingly, fakes laughter): Oh don’t worry about that. That’s just one of Melody’s pranks. She played it on me last year.

Female Science Teacher: Ah okay.

Mother: Thank you for telling me anyway, bye.

Female Scene Teacher: but---

The phone line cut off as Mother puts down the phone.

Mother (calling to Father): Melody has gone to see Brongo. I have to go after her.

Part Two: Bedfordshire Zoo
Back at Bedfordshire Zoo, Melody tries to talk to Brongo whilst the four members of her class watch and laugh behind her. She reads questions off her cards.

Melody: Brongo, where you were living before you came to Bedfordshire?

Brongo: -

Melody: Brongo?

Class Boy 1 (patronising): I don’t think he likes you Melody.

Melody: Perhaps a different question will work. Do you have any family Brongo?

No answered is heard from Brongo even after Melody repeats the question. She rattles the bar cage to get his attention.

Class Girl 1: Is he asleep?

Melody: Umm---

Class Girl 2: No his eyes seem to be open.

Melody: Perhaps another question will be better. Why did you choose to speak me a week ago?

Class Boy 2 (imitates an ape): I didn’t Melody, I didn’t.

Melody turns around and glares at Class Boy 2.

Melody: Shut up you idiot. (pauses) Sorry not you Brongo.

The class laugh and make funny noises.

Melody: Brongo? Are you okay? Please say something.

Melody shakes the bars of the enclosure.

Melody: Speak to me. Speak Brongo Speak.

Class Girl 1: As I said before Melody. Gorillas can’t---

Melody (angrily interrupts): ---Yes Brongo can. Perhaps he doesn’t like you. Just go away. Go on. Go away you twerps.

Class Boy 1 (laughing): Have we rattled your cage?

Class Girl 2: Brongo the talking monkey? More like delusion.

Melody (shouting at the group): I’m not insane. How dare you say that. If any of you came to me and said you discovered a talking ape I wouldn’t have laughed at you but would have been interested. Just leave me be will you?

Class Boy 2: Our pleasure, let’s go.

The class members depart laughing from the area.

Part 3: Facing Reality
I’m just glad I met you, my exceptional Melody Delilah...Copyright © 2006- BanyanTree.            All rights reserved.
Melody stands before Brongo crying. Her tears wet the floor beneath her feet.

Melody: Why didn’t you speak Brongo? Why?

Brongo: I’m sorry Melody. I really am but I’m not here to talk to others. I only want to talk to you. Call it the gift of Melody Delilah.

Melody jumps when Brongo speaks. She wipes away her tears and smiles.

Melody: I like that.

Brongo: Plus you’re the only one who can truly help us.

Melody: Help you?

Brongo: The other day one of the baby gorillas had an accident. He fell off the tire swing and damaged one of its legs. So we need you.

Melody: Oh that’s awful. What do you need me for?

Brongo: Well he needs some sort of aid. Could you bring us some and climb over the cage bars? Please Melody. It would mean everything to---

Melody (interrupting) ---I’m not too sure. What happens if I can’t? Can the zookeepers help at all?

Brongo: If the poor mite doesn’t get attention soon he might die. It has to be you.

Melody: That’s awful. I’ll try my best.

Brongo: Thanks Melody Delilah. I knew we could count on you.

Melody: I’ll be back soon.

Melody runs out of ‘The Ape and Monkey Habit’. She panics as she is uncertain where she can any sort of aid. She then remembers the question cards in her pocket. She takes them out and folds them in half. She then runs back to ‘The Ape and Monkey Habit’.

Melody: Right Brongo I’ve got something.

Brongo looks down at the question cards.

Brongo: Oh hopefully they should work. Please come over Melody.

After a deep breath, Melody starts climbing the gates bars into the gorilla enclosure. She struggles at first then finds her grip. She then leans over and jumps into the habitat. Brongo sits on the other side.

Melody: Where’s the baby?

Melody starts to walk towards the tire swing where Brongo points. She notices several gorillas surrounding her. She edges closer then stops at the sound of her Mother’s voice. Mother appears in ‘The Ape and Monkey Habitat’ and notices Melody in the gorilla enclosure.

Mother (shouting): Melody! What are you doing? Get out of there!

Mother runs to the gates of the gorilla habitat and shakes the bars.

Melody: What are you doing here Mum?...I’m helping an injured animal.

Mother continues to bang on the bars. The constant loud noise causes a Female Zookeeper and many others to appear.

Mother (pleading) Please let me in. For God sake! My daughter Melody is in her. Melody! Melody! Get out of there now! Please love, get out of there.
Melody: Why? I’m just helping the injured baby gorilla, which Brongo told me about.

Melody edges closer to the tire swing.

Mother: Melody, he didn’t tell you such a thing. The gorilla you’ve called Brongo doesn’t talk darling.

Female Zookeeper: Brongo? I’ve heard of that name before.

Mother (to Female Zookeeper): What? (to Melody): Get out Melody!

Melody: No! Not until I’ve helped this poor mite.

Female Zookeeper: Oh yes that’s it. A zookeeper that used to work here named one the gorillas Brongo. He thought it would make a good name, but frankly I’m not sure.

Mother: Its name is Brongo?

Mother pauses in shock then realises the situation again. She then starts shaking the Female Zookeeper.

Melody: My daughter’s in here so get her out instead of just standing there.

Female Zookeeper: I have already informed the zoo guards. They’ll get her out.

Melody reaches the tire swing. She notices a large gorilla and a hurt baby ape on the floor nearby the tire swing. Brongo gets very close to Melody.

Brongo: Thank you Melody. Have you got the aid?

Melody: It’s right here.

Melody uses the question card as a bandage around the baby gorilla’s frail leg.

Melody: You’ll be just fine.

As Melody says these words Zoo Guards appear in the corner of the enclosure carrying guns. They fire at Brongo who is standing close by to Melody. The loud shot is heard and Brongo falls onto the floor. Mother and Female Zookeeper witness this whilst Melody just hears the sound and then looks down at Brongo who is in agony upon the floor. She is extremely tearful.

Melody: (to Brongo): Brongo! What have they done to you? (to the Zoo Guards) How could you? How could you?

Melody tries to get closer to the now dying Brongo. She gets pulled back and is held by one of the Zoo Guard who tries to calm her down. The other Zoo Guards make sure the gorillas do not come any closer. Outside the cage the Female Zookeeper and Mother look on. Mother looks very upset and distressed. Melody then screams and kicks.

Melody: Why? Why? He wasn’t going to hurt me. Brongo wouldn’t do such a thing. He was only telling me about the injured baby gorilla over there.

Some of the guards try and find the injured baby gorilla.

Brongo (struggling): It’s okay Melody, it really is. I’m just glad I met you, my exceptional Melody Delilah. If anyone laughs at you just tell them you have the gift of Melody Delilah.

Brongo closes his waxed ruby eyes. Some of the Zoo Guards notice the injured baby gorilla close by.

Melody (weeping): That’s very kind Brongo. I won’t forget you…Did you what Brongo said Mum?

Mother: No love. I’m just glad you’re safe.

Melody (to herself): That’s the gift of Melody Delilah.
