Hey everyone! Jake here!

It’s back and it’s back for Christmas. For those of you who are unaware ‘Stunning YouTube Videos’ was a blog feature where I looked at some of the videos across the web that caught my attention over the last month. So I thought it was only fitting to give you some festive treats produced some excellent film makers.

Right, here is the selection for the 2014 Christmas Edition. Enjoy!

Video 1: ‘“The Night Before Christmas” Short Film’
Dead Set Films has produced a simply magical video called The Night Before Christmas. The cinematography and visuals produced here are simply professional. The real detail focused on the Christmas tree, decorations and presents is wonderful. There is a real Christmassy feel to the overall sense of this short film. Without spoiling it, the video set on the night before Christmas day where one man commits a desperate act. Through the atmospheric scenery and music DC Kasundra, along with their colleagues, has produced a stunning piece emphasising the importance of family during a festive season such as this.

Video 2: ‘Decoration (Short Film)’
Decoration is a highly imaginative tale created by ThirdTakeProductions. Daniel Pursue has done an excellent job in producing both an atmospheric and a darkly rich tale about what could happen if one of your Christmas decorations came to life. Sam Cliff’s acting and Luke Neumann and Kevin Macleod’s music should be credited for their believability and the way they create both a warm and sinister atmosphere. I have watched this short film a number of times as it simply haunting. So take care when deciding which decorations you are going to hang on your Christmas tree.

Right, that is everything from Stunning YouTube Videos this year. The blog feature may appear in 2015 with your videos being praised.

Until then I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hats on for Christmas (Dyspraxia Foundation Christmas Appeal 2014)

Hats on for Christmas (Dyspraxia Foundation Christmas Appeal 2014)

Dyspraxia is a form of Developmental Coordination Disorder which affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It can also have an impact on speech. There is currently no cure. It can have a serious impact on the individual’s life and can cause great hardship for all those involved.

Please read this article, called ‘What is Dyspraxia? (The Basics)’, for further details:
http://jakeborrett.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/what-is-dyspraxia-basics.html

-----

This Christmas please get involved in the ‘Dyspraxia Foundation Christmas Appeal 2014’ named ‘Hats on for Christmas’. This appeal aims to raise as much awareness as possible for the learning condition. It hopes to do so by showing the faces of all those affected but also all the love and support they have received.

You can help get involved by following these three simple steps:

Step 1
Take a photograph of yourself wearing some sort of Christmas hat and holding up a piece of paper that says something about Dyspraxia.

Then either post your photograph onto the ‘Dyspraxia Foundation’ Facebook Page found here https://www.facebook.com/dyspraxiafoundation?fref=ts or by emailing it to fundraisingtrustee@dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk and they will do it for you. They will also add all photographs to their Twitter Page.

Many people have got involved already, so why not join in.

Step 2
If you like you can make a voluntary donation to the brilliant Dyspraxia Foundation, who continues to help thousands of people affected by the condition.
To do so text ‘HATS02 £2’ to 70070

Step 3
You can change your profile pictures on social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to their Dyspraxia Foundation Christmas logo. This will help spread lots of awareness across many social media platforms.

-----

I have had Dyspraxia since I was a child, but was only diagnosed at the age of eighteen. Like many, I know the importance of getting the word out there so those impacted can get the support they need and ultimately deserve. So I have decided to get involved myself. Here is my photograph, hoping to send a good message out for Dyspraxia.

Thanks for the continual support everyone and have a great week.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Back in June 2014 I, along with a few others, became barristers for the day. No, we were not asked to stand in court and defend or prosecute a client against a criminal act. Now that would be scary. No, we were asked to act instead. We became extras for the day.

This opportunity was initially posted on the University of Hertfordshire website. It mentioned that a digital creative company known as Clearhead were going to create a promotional video for the School of Law. They needed students to volunteer for the day to take part in a film which showcased the ‘real experiences’, ‘real courses’ and ‘real futures’ which the university offers.

Clearhead needed to make the film seem as realistic as possible. Some of us were asked to dress smartly as if we were members of the court, while others like me also had wear barrister outfits. As you will see in the video, the barristers were split into two ‘teams’. The defendants were made up of Summer and I, while Shivam and another member of our group were on the prosecution side.

Of course when creating professional videos like this one, you do encounter some small problems. For me this happened to be the costumes. As you can see from the photograph below, the robes and the hair wig are very much real props. As you wore them all day they would often come out of place, and a member of the Clearhead team had to fix them in place again. Also, I had some problems with my acting. When it came to my close-up, it did take quite a few shots to get the impression that I was a winning barrister, but we got there in the end. These problems are all extremely forgivable as this was my first time acting, but hopefully not the last.

Call me Barrister Jake if you wish...
I have to commend Clearhead for doing such an excellent job. Each member of their team was extremely helpful, patient and hardworking in making such a professional video for the university. They also gave us a good insight into how to produce and edit such a challenging video as this one. Hopefully I will be able to channel some of their expertise in the future if I ever decide to create some videos of my own. You can see their other projects at http://weareclearhead.com/ They are definitely worth a watch.

I would thoroughly recommend ‘extra’ opportunities to you. They gave you a good insight into the world of producing and acting, while at the same time are extremely fun to take part in. You can watch the video titled ‘Mooting – real experiences in law’ below. See if you can spot me.

Perhaps one day you will see me acting in a big blockbuster film…Or perhaps I should stick to writing. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend.

Taken Over By Me

Note: As Halloween has now gone by, it can be revealed that this blog post was a piece of fiction. Or was it?
Taken Over By Me

Hey everyone! Jake isn't here!

Do you remember when that sap said there was something out to get him? Oh of course you do. That was me and now he’s gone. Did you like him? Shame.

It was so easy, so very easy.

Anyway, things are going to be different around here. You’ll soon find out. Trust me you don’t want to miss it.

For now, have a scary Halloween.

Stay Safe

Hey everyone! Jake here!

As you know each week I would usually post a new blog entry. However today is slightly different. I do not know how to put this but something odd happened last night.

You see it was just after midnight when I decided to go to bed. As I began drifting off I am sure I heard something. There was a sort of hissing noise. Then there was a groan. Then there were footsteps. Whatever was in my bedroom seemed to be making its way towards me. It stopped. Somehow I felt its presence over me, just waiting to see my reaction.

I woke up. No one was there. I checked on my mum and sister to make sure they were not playing a practical joke. To be fair that is more the sort of thing my cousin would do. In this case they were both asleep. Hmm how strange.

Well I hope to be back next week with another blog post. Hopefully this will not happen again. In the meantime stay safe.

Could dark Halloween forces be at work here?

Dyspraxic, But Also Fantastic

Dyspraxic, But Also Fantastic

Dyspraxia is a form of Developmental Coordination Disorder which affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It can also have an impact on speech. There is no cure at present. It can have a serious impact on the individual’s life and can cause great hardship for all those involved.

On my last article titled ‘Diving into Dyspraxia’ I ended with the statement that those with the condition are ‘not only Dyspraxic but they can also be fantastic’. With the right support and love those with the serious condition can reach their full potential, thrive in society and leave behind amazing legacies.

I have lived with Dyspraxia since childhood and have found this statement to be extremely positive in the sense it gives the motivation to overcome any obstacle that may come my way.

As ‘Dyspraxia Awareness Week’ takes place between Sunday 12th October and Saturday 18th October 2014, I thought it was only right to talk about the incredible things people with Dyspraxia have done and the abundance of talent they have shown.

The Dyspraxia Mind-Map
On the ‘Dyspraxia Foundation’ Facebook page I came across this encouraging mind-map which demonstrates the positive attributes whose with Dyspraxia often display.

It would seem that those impacted can be empathetic; can be forgiving; and can be sensitive. In this article I will be focusing on how inspiring and courageous these individuals can be, as despite the pain they may be going through they are still simply incredible.

Inspiring
There is no doubt that those with Dyspraxia are inspirational individuals. They may have difficulties, for example when it comes to coordination and speech, but they are so determined that they aim to achieve great heights.

This beautiful poem titled ‘I am the Boy’ is written by Mikey, a thirteen year old boy with Verbal Dyspraxia. He has written an incredibly powerful piece expressing his thoughts on a condition that impacts him daily. His wonderful mother said that this is something he would find very challenging to do verbally. His family are so proud of him and they should be. Coming from someone who lives with Dyspraxia, I thoroughly applaud you Mikey. You are a true inspiration.

Mikey is just one example of how motivating people with Dyspraxia can be. It is the love and support from family, close friends and supporters which gives them the determination to move millions.

Courageous
It is hard to admit but like many others I was bullied at school. This was mainly due to the ‘differences’ which Dyspraxia often presents. I was often laughed at when I played sport or when my handwriting looked like barbed wire.

Despite these times I will never forget what one of my friends told me.
They said “Jake, you are the most courageous person I’ve ever known.”
I thanked them, not truly knowing what they meant by this.

Over the last few years, as I have understood my conditions more, I realise that perhaps what they were trying to say is that in spite of the suffering I faced I was not going to let those few negative people destroy my life. Instead I tried very hard to focus on those who made a positive difference. Of course this took time, but I still built up the courage to walk away from all those bad influences.

Stories like this are surprisingly common with those living with Dyspraxia. It takes real courage to live with any learning condition, especially if it is one where you are prone to be attacked by horrible people. Ignoring them and their mean comments does take a lot of bravery.

-----

No matter who you may be, just remember this. Every single individual who is fighting against a condition like Dyspraxia is a real person. Just like many others, life throws them difficult challenges which they have to face. Overcoming these obstacles takes real guts, persistence and dedication. They are also fantastic individuals who have demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate how courageous and inspirational they can be to all those who are willing to listen.

Thanks everyone for the brilliant support and have a great weekend.

The Moon

The Moon

Have you seen the moon? I mean, really seen it? It is not just a lump in the sky which should be passed by. It is not just another natural phenomenon found in our world. It is much more than that. It is magical. It changes people. It makes you believe that it is watching over you. It sees your every move; it feels your every action; and reads your every thought. Mainly though it is there to make you cling onto hope. It is the light in the darkened sky. Whilst everything else is in the shade, it continues to shine bright. It makes you want to fight, no matter how beaten you may feel.

As a kid I wanted to visit the moon. You could say that it is too late for me now. But that does not really matter. I can still see and enjoy it from where I am, right beside you.

Who is Jake Borrett? (1)

Who is Jake Borrett? (1)

Believe it or not this writing blog has now been running for just under seven months. Where has all that time gone? I have no idea. One thing I know is that it could not have been done without you. You are what has made this blog a success. You are all brilliant individuals.

So I thought after all this time it would be only right that you learn a little bit more about me. Who is Jake Borrett?

Why did you set up the writing blog?
This writing blog would not have existed without the dedication from the staff at my secondary school. My English teachers and particularly the Learning Support staff were so inspirational that they got me interested into English language and literature.

There are many blogs out there on the web. For me, a blog gives me an outlet to express my deepest emotions, fears and desires into words that perhaps I would not be able to say out loud. This is especially the case when it comes to the articles raising awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease ‘Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis’ and Dyspraxia.
I have had many tough times with these conditions, but if I can break the barriers that they present and at the same time inspire others to have confidence in themselves then that is all I ask for.

Who are your biggest inspirations?
My biggest inspirations have to be my family. Without a doubt my dad, my mum and my sister are people which I always look up to. Despite the tough times they have gone through themselves, be it illness, bereavements or suffering, they have always tried to remain strong. I am very grateful to have them in my life and cannot thank them enough.

What is the one film that you would recommend to someone?
As you know, there so many great films that have been produced. If I had to pick one it would be the 2002 movie ‘A Beautiful Mind’. Russell Crowe does a magnificent job of portraying John Nash, a Novel Laureate in Economics. Based on Nash’s real life, it is rich with emotion as it focuses on the sensitive subject of mental illness.

What is the most memorable place that you have ever travelled to?
I have been fortunate to been able to have travelled to a varied number of places over my twenty years. It is so hard to pick, but I will never forget swimming in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Swimming with the fish as they tickled at my feet was unforgettable. If you have always wanted to do it, then please do. You will love it.

Swimming with the fish in The Great Barrier Reef was unforgettable.

What piece of advice would you give to someone?
Well it would depend on the person who is receiving the advice as everyone sees the world differently. Saying that, I would encourage people to try to live life without having any regrets. Regrets are hard to deal with and they can haunt us. If there is something you have always wanted to do, you should try to strive for it. After all, many of us want to be happy.

-----

I hope you learnt a bit more about me. There may be more articles like this in the future. Ultimately it is you which make this writing blog a success. Words do not do it justice to how much it means to me.

Just to let you know this upcoming Monday, or Monday 29th September 2014 if you are reading in the future, I will be starting my second year at the University of Hertfordshire with brand new people. This is because I had to defer my second year due to a Crohn’s Disease flare-up back in October 2013. This is something which I am apprehensive about, but hopefully it should all go okay.

Do not worry; I will still be back next week with more content. Until then thank you so much and have a fantastic week.

When I Hear The Sirens

When I Hear The Sirens

When I hear the sirens…I panic.
It’s the cops out on their morning call,
Saving the good guys and punishing the bad.
Oh yes they deserve their credit, but here I am
Hoping they do not find them in time.

When I hear the sirens...I shudder.
It’s the firefighters out on their evening job,
Controlling the heat and saving the trapped.
Oh yes they deserve their recognition, but here I am
Hoping the flames continue to burn.

When I hear the sirens…I weep.
It’s the paramedics out on their night run,
Healing the injured and caring for the sick.
Oh yes they deserve their praise, but here I am
Hoping their treatment does not work.

When I hear the sirens…I close my eyes
To remember all those I panicked for;
To recall all those I shuddered for;
To mourn all those I wept for.
But no one will do the same for me.

Here I am hoping the flames continue to burn...Copyright © 2005- MarcusObal. All rights reserved.

More Than Just ‘Imaginary’

More Than Just ‘Imaginary’

It took over four years to get my diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease. This might not sound like a lot but for a nine year old going through excruciating pain, both physically and mentally, every day seemed like forever.

This is one of hardest pieces of writing I have ever done. Perhaps this is because it is so difficult to express all my experiences and emotions over four years into such few words. To put it in four and rather kind words, my doctor was incompetent.

Back in 2004 when I was just nine years old I was suffering with extreme abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and stunted growth. As many sufferers may recognise these are classic symptoms of either Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Both are chronic and both are incurable. So it was only natural that my family had a feeling there was something wrong with me and so took me to the hospital. This doctor supposedly worked as a consultant paediatric with ‘skills’ in toileting issues, chronic pain and fatigue. Unfortunately he still does.

In a word he treated me dreadfully. I have read his profile recently and it still states that he believes tests and investigations are rather ‘unnecessary’. He was very reluctant to treat me. I have to say that most of our appointments were spent going through poo charts. Any blood tests that we arranged he would ignore the results and pass my blood off as being normal.  One point down the line after much pain, ambulances and fighting, he put me on laxatives. I was already going to the toilet at least six times a day so laxatives were not the correct treatment for me. I just accepted it then, but now I know the truth.

What makes it so much worse is that he branded my disease as ‘imaginary’. He put it down to an ‘over anxious mother’. In reality I was suffering from an unknown serious condition and he just could not accept it. My mum was never over anxious; she was just doing what anyone would do for their loved ones, seek help. Unfortunately this help was not given in the right moral way.

Yes we all make mistakes as human beings but it is not acceptable on any level to belittle or insult someone. Plus his insults didn’t make any sense. How could all my pain be a result of someone else’s worry? The answer is it can’t be. My voice was muffled as I was not allowed to express my feelings to someone was supposed to be a professional.

After four years of fighting with my doctor, we had enough. We managed to get a second opinion. After an endoscopy and colonoscopy I found out I was suffering from Crohn’s Disease. My new ‘second’ doctor urged the ‘first’ accountable doctor to apologise. All my mum received was a half-hearted phone call. The scars will never truly heal.

One of these scars is the photograph below. It is taken in Gran Canaria at the time when I was undergoing the laxative treatment. I do not remember the holiday for its beautiful scenery but spending most of the day in the toilet. Every time I look at the photograph it reminds me of the struggle I went through, but also the amount of strength I have now have and the unwillingness to allow my voice to be silenced again.

Gran Canaria, April 2005:
‘Smiling has always been easier than explaining why I’m sad.’  (© 2014 IdleHearts)

The point of this article is not to rant or to bash this specific doctor. There are many doctors who are extremely supportive and some are even lifesavers. It is just unfortunate that I and many others out there have come across those horrible few. Some do not even receive an apology for all their pain.

No, the point of this article is to raise awareness for Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, which are two very real diseases. So please do share this blog article. Also if you or your loved ones are experiencing any sort of pain and suspect something is wrong, do not let anyone else pass it off as simply imaginary. Speak out against them. You deserve to receive the right support and treatment you need to strive in society. You have the right to be happy. Do not let anyone take this away from you. I know I won’t.

Stay strong everyone and thanks for the brilliant support.

Stuffed Toys

Stuffed Toys

She got them out the cupboard and placed them onto the bed. All six stuff toys, all bears, all looking forward expect one. There was something about this bear. It was largest than the rest. But that wasn’t it. There was something else. It was staring at her. It was judging her. If only she could read its thoughts.

There was a buzzing from downstairs. The phone made this noise every time somebody wanted her. So she did what she was told. She followed the sound into the hall. She picked it up. But no one was there. She slammed it on the hook and went up as before.

She stopped at the entrance to her room. She noticed it. Something had changed. The sixth bear had gone, but where?

Hey everyone! Jake here!

Time does really fly by. I cannot believe it is actually the end of August already. Where did the month go? Anyway it is that time once again where we explore some of the Stunning YouTube Videos that have stood out over the last month.

Right, here is the selection for August.

Video 1: ‘If Google was a Guy’ by CollegeHumor
College Humor has produced many insightful and funny videos over the last few years. One in particular which has stood out is their ‘If Google was a Guy’. It looks at the hypothetical situation of what would happen if all our search engines were delivered to just one individual. How would they react? How would they cope? What would you ask them? There have been three parts to this so far but I advise to start from the beginning. Trust me they are hilarious and very creative. Thank you for this brilliant entertainment.

Video 2: ‘A Beautiful World- Stunning HD Video (Band of Horses – Funeral)’ by WorldVisionHD
A Beautiful World by World Vision HD is an incredible video showing the beauty of our planet. The photography and the video clips of the scenery are simply outstanding. They really allow admiring the magnificent and greatly diverse world we live in. The melody ‘Funeral’ by Band of Horses sets the magical atmosphere of ice, water and earth. Together this produces a video which will stay with you long after you have viewed it. My words do not do it justice.

Video 3: ‘ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE – UNCENSORED & Sexy?’ by Anthony Carbajal
You have probably heard of and viewed the latest craze that has swept the internet. I am talking about the talking about the Ice Bucket Challenge. It is a noble cause hoping to raise awareness and funds for charity, most notable for ALS ‘Amyotrophic Later Sclerosis’. This is often known as Motor Neurone Disease in the United Kingdom. There have been thousands of videos of people taking part, including many celebrities. Only a few have stayed with me.

Anthony Carbajal is one of those. In a word he is an inspiration. He has a running history of ALS in his family, and has recently been diagnosed himself at the age of twenty six. From the deep emotion that runs through the video, you can see how much it means to him that such a cruel condition is getting the awareness it needs. So please do donate as much as you can to the ALS charities out there. It does make a big difference to somebody’s life.

See you next time. Until then, take great care.

The Beach for the Chosen One

The Beach for the Chosen One

The crowd gathered one warm summer’s day upon the aureate sand.
Some of which decided to cleanse within the shimmering azure sea,
Whilst others played, bathed, ate and drank upon its soft surface.
Prancing and dancing upon the beach, the thousand were merry.

Despite knowing that their time upon this tranquil shore was very short,
Each of them believed that variety made this place bloom and blossom.
None of whom knew who exactly would be selected from this lottery
And then would be asked to twirl and whirl away from this haven.

Suddenly the first order violently trembled across the serene seaside.
As the announcer put it, those who were ‘female’ were told to leave.
They collected their chipped high heels and sandy blankets then left.
With that only five hundred and fifty male guests remained.

With sandcastles built and balls caught, the demand was heard.
As the mature one put it, those who were ‘young’ had to go home.
They found their buckets and spades and sport games then left.
With that only four hundred and eighty grownups continued.

After a short duration the next command was barked from yonder.
As the chief put it, those who were ‘not white’ were requested to vacate.
They grouped together their designer sunglasses and watches then vanished.
With that only three hundred and forty white visitors lingered.

Time passed instantly and the third instruction was given to them.
As the commander put it, those who were ‘religious’ needed to go.
With scriptures read, charms worn and prayers cast they disappeared.
With that only three hundred lambs endured.

With ice-creams consumed and drinks glugged another came.
Those who were ‘old and feeble, sick and diseased’ were the next to go.
Slowly they packed away their vital chairs, aids and medication.
With that only two hundred and fifty healthy patients persisted.

With the sun sweltering and sweat dripping there was a further imperative.
Those who were ‘not straight’ were summoned to depart from the area.
They collated their swimsuits, hairsprays and cravats then they were gone.
With that only two hundred conventional lovers stayed.

With books read and games played the screeching sound came again.
As the voice declared those who were ‘working class’ must go home.
They gathered their scraps and empty wallets together then fled.
With that only sixty aristocrats sat proudly.

After debating whether they could ease, a final decree was bellowed.
As the genius argued, those who ‘do not have a 140+ IQ’ needed to exit.
Shamefully hiding their ‘what you should know’ guides they trailed away.
With that only one person was left.

After this, the powerful influence said one word, ‘continue’, then was quiet.
The chosen one, whilst was seen as superior and now ruled the beach,
Was cold as the sun faded away and hungry as snacks could not be sold.
Mainly he was angry as the once gloriously diverse beach was now lost.
